"The Carpenter’s community also is known as Carpenter’s Campground. About 1850, Thomas Carpenter and Phillip Costner gave land for a Methodist campground and church, and the name of the community quickly evolved.
Other names also came along for the area, mainly from post offices serving it. From 1870-91, it was called Huffstetler’s Store; from 1891 to 1903, McKinley for the post office; and from 1907-32, Montvale Station for a stop on the railroad to allow Montvale Springs Hotel visitors to board.
They were met there by hotel transportation. A great deal of iron ore was taken from three or more locations near Carpenter’s Campground and shipped to Rockwood in the early 1900s.
Blount County established a high school at Carpenter’s in 1918 and closed it five years later.
The current Carpenters Elementary, which was built in 2006, serves grades K-5 and has the second-largest enrollment of all county elementary schools. The current Carpenters Middle, which was built in 2001..."
